A pensioner has returned a packet of Jaffa Cakes he stole as a 15-year-old schoolboy half a century ago.

John Bibby took the biscuits while working at a coffee bar on a holiday camp in Skipsea, East Yorkshire. But the guilt has stayed with him ever since so he finally decided to confess all to his former boss Leslie Simpson. Mr Bibby, 65, bought a packet for 92p and drove nearly 50 miles from his home in York to own up to Mr Simpson, 79, who lives near Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Retired teacher Mr Bibby said: "I've always had a sweet tooth, I was hungry and thought I would have just one Jaffa Cake from a packet. But I ended up eating the whole lot and never told anybody about it. I still felt guilty and decided it was finally time to own up, so I tracked Les down and phoned him up. I drove to see him and immediately said, "Les, I have something to confess". I pulled out the pack of Jaffa Cakes and told him the story, the first time I have ever admitted what I did to anybody. It felt like a weight off my shoulders. He was lost for words, absolutely amazed I had remembered this because he didn't have a clue about it. We ended up having a good laugh about it."

Mr Simpson, who sold his coffee shops in 1972 and became an artist, said: "He must have felt guilty about it all these years, but I knew nothing about it. It's 50 years ago. He didn't need to worry about it, I mean what's a packet of Jaffa Cakes? I don't even like Jaffa Cakes. From the look on his face I think he thought I was going to tell him off after all these years. We ended up roaring with laughter about it."

Doesn't like Jaffa Cakes!!!
