A new world record has been set in Brixham for the largest gathering of pirates.

Exactly 1,722 men, women and children dressed in pirate gear for the record attempt. The previous record of 1,651 was set in Portland, America in September, 2009.

Karen Barnes, a spokesman for the Brixham pirates, said: "We feel wonderful. We have broken the world record. I am thrilled the town has beaten the record. Everywhere you went there were pirates."

A spokesman for Guinness World Records revealed the record would be verified over the next few weeks.

For God's sake... what is there to verify? Where some people dressed as pirates but not part of the record attempt?
