In 2000 the BBC made a similar programme when they took 36 people, families and singles, and dropped them on an island in the Hebrides. They were left for a year and we got an update every few months.
That was the birth of reality TV in Britain. No twenty four hour coverage. No voting off via premium rate phone lines. No mass media coverage. No daft tasks. Just dumped on an island and get on with it. Oh, we might come back in a few months and see if you're still alive. Of the original 36 how many can you remember? Well, Ben Fogle and errm that's it.
So the new series has started. This time it's an island near New Zealand, there's only 13 of them, and it's only scheduled to run for 3 months. The castaways include an ex-marine, an ex-lap dancer, a rabid tory, a clean drug addict, an Essex girl, a public school boy, and Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons. Well actually a fat, unpublished sci-fi writer called Alister. I can't see any of this lot hanging around.
They've only been there for two days and there have been arguments, disastrous food gathering attempts, and, best of all, they managed to burst their water supply.
Will they survive? Will they settle down? Will we care?
Put a message in a bottle below.

Starvation, thirst, crapping in a hole. That's OK but now they're flying in Jade...
I've just read that back and would like to apologise for the unintentional pun.

Indeed, I think that film gave a lot of people's development a jump start.

It was in my dreams.

Sadly that wasn't a reality TV show.

I'd have the one where you get stuck in the outback with Jenny Agutter.
