Illusionist Derren Brown has revealed his latest stunt to be shown on TV - making a woman believe that she has died in a car accident.

Julie Simm was hypnotised by Brown before being taken to a mock crash scene. She was then allowed to wander around the wreckage whilst ambulance men removed what appeared to be her body from a car.

The stunt is part of Derren Brown's new series Trick or Treat. A source at Channel 4 said, "She can't believe what's happening. As far as she's aware she is still alive, so she ends up having this strange out-of-body experience. She's clearly distressed, but not hysterically so."

They added, "She vowed to wear her seat belt from now on so it's had some public service value."

Now I find Derren Brown to be entertaining, interesting and amusing.  I've enjoyed every one of his programmes that I've seen but is this a stunt too far?  The truth behind hypnosis is that you can't be made to do anything that you don't want to. So while the people picked for these programmes are not stooges in that they are 'in' on the gag but they are selected by, for want of a better word, their gullibility.

Are You trained in being an adept in hypnosis, NLP or any of the other persuading persuasions? Expiring minds want to know

Robert Haas (16-03-2007 23:31:37)

LOL.. perfect!

The 'target' would have to be either very susceptible or want to be hypnotised.I think just firing them off randomly would have an exceptionally high failure rate. Well, if it worked all the spammers would be doing it!

Do You believe that a true "hypnotic trance" can be successfully accomplished via an Instant Message, or by a long series of them?

revrobuk (16-03-2007 13:39:28)

Ha! Very probably! Mind you Penn and Teller did the same sort of thing and it didn't them much harm.

Yes, Brown's book was very clear on these points. It was very honest and very entertaining at the same time. Do you think his disclosures and giving away trade secrets upset many NLPers, Hypnotists and illusionists? He really did reveal a great many "tricks of the trade."

I'm sure that you're right in that a lot of people (let's be honest, men) sign up for these courses thinking they're going to walk out being able to control people. I'm also sure that there are plenty of people out there who are quite happy to set up a course promising that and taking their money. I'm not saying that these techniques don't work, just that they don't deliver total control over others. One of the things Derren Brown says in his book is that people have got to want to be hypnotised and will only do what they want to do. His success on the shows comes from selecting the right people, not stooges, just ones that are sufficiently accepting. He also says that NLP is more of a technique for getting people to agree with you by appearing to be very similar to them. If it's done wrong it is very creepy!

What do You think of Hypnotic seminar training.. it seems that most such NLP seminars in the US are geared to men who want to get laid, or people who want to boss their boss, be it by stealth, influence or just plain inflluence
