French wartime sitcom 'Allo 'Allo is returning for a one-off special, the BBC has confirmed.

The new episode, which will reunite the original cast, is being recorded in Manchester on 22 March and is due to be screened later in the spring.

Gorden Kaye, who played hapless cafe owner Rene Artois in the comedy, will reprise his role.

There won't be a full reunion as his on-screen wife, Edith, played by Carmen Silvera, died in 2002. Also Richard Marner, who played Colonel Von Strohm, died in 2004.

Another problem could be the ages of the stars. Do we really want to watch a 66 year old Rene chasing a 57 year old Yvette? That is going to be the biggest test of the public's gag reflex since the marriage of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles.

As it's only a one off I can't really bang on about the lack of imagination in comedy writing  but instead wonder what other shows would benefit from a onr off special.

I'm not sure if it's the fallen madonna but the rest of it is right.

It's a sad fact of the last few years that very little original stuff is being made. Old shows and films are being brought back, or remade with a new cast.

We should move forwards not backwards.

Admittedly I'm pushing against an open door here as I thought the original was first class. I only suggested Clarkson to try and get a reaction.

garethwi (15-03-2007 06:15:40)

but still ultimately likeable. In my opinion.

Was Eddington's Hacker that likeable? He was an amiable buffoon but I think he was also easily manipulated and prone to panic.

garethwi (13-03-2007 14:37:10)

I don't see it. Hacker would have to be likeable.

revrobuk (13-03-2007 10:05:21)

Let's see... Hacker was more naive, less well educated, but still fond of his own voice and opinions...Jeremy Clarkson?

garethwi (13-03-2007 06:14:15)

Yes, but who would be a good Jim Hacker?

revrobuk (12-03-2007 22:04:44)

I think a remake of 'Yes, Prime Minister' would be good. I can just see Stephen Fry as Sir Humphrey Appleby.

garethwi (12-03-2007 14:01:23)

Not really. One thing that made sure it is remembered for it's quality, is because they made exactly the right amount of episodes.

Any more would only detract from it as a whole.

I'd like to think the quality of the programme had something to do with that decision...
