Who do you think should play Gypsy Rose Lee?
Sigourney Weaver is set to play a stripper in an upcoming film about the life of Gypsy Rose Lee. She will play the role of burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee in the film entitled Gypsy and Me. The film is based upon a memoir, My G-String Mother: At Home And Backstage With Gypsy Rose Lee, written by Eric Lee Preminger.| Results | |

Now I don't wish to appear rude but Ms Weaver is pushing 60 with a very short stick and even in her hey day could not be classed as a stunner. At best she is usually described as having 'unconventional' looks.
I don't wish to appear cynical but it wouldn't be her other role as Executive Producer that got her the gig would it?
Before I reach for the can opener and there are worms everywhere I have to say that I'm not against anyone getting their kit off for the sake of art or just for the hell of it. Young, old, fat, thin, I don't give a damn. I just think that this smacks of 'look at me, I've still got it' or possibly 'I can afford to keep it ironed'.
Flash your thoughts below.

Sigourney had a body double for the more strenuous moves.
Good points, well made.

I supppose saying there shouldn't be strippers would make me sound like some sort of religious fundamentalist, but to some extent I do mean that.
Or to be more complete on the subject, I think that a lot of how the seamier side of life is handled should be abolished, purely because of the indecent way in which it is handled.
I am all for strippers, and other workers in the sex industry, because I believe someone should be allowed to do whatever they want with their own body, as long as it is not to the detriment of someone else. What I'm against is the fact that even in countries like the Netherlands or New Zealand, where virtually all aspects of the sex industry are legal or decriminalised, there is still a slave trade surrounding the less fortunate of these women.
As for actresses stripping for a film; when the actress has a certain level of fame, it seems that the nudity is there more for publicity than plot enhancement, and when she's unknown it smacks more of exploitation..

Kate Moss was the first name that came into my head.
Are you saying that a film about strippers shouldn't have stripping in it or that there shouldn't be strippers full stop?

Yes, but I don't think of Kate Moss as being any kind of yardstick of beauty.
Anyway, my point is more that a woman of any age shouldn't be stripping for a film about a stripper. It just undignified.

Alright, not beautiful then, but at least as valid and acceptable as some young stick insect like Kate Moss.

no

I suppose another argument is why should only people that conform to a particular stereotype, i.e.young, slim, etc., get to whip 'em out? Doesn't this show us that all bodies, whatever their age or shape, can be beautiful?

Gross! The woman should grow some dignity.
