One in 10 of us will lie about movies we've seen to show off and one in 7 admits to "film-dropping" to impress others.

The poll by social networking website myfilms.com also shows almost a quarter (23%) admit to judging people's characters according to their taste in film. One in 10 of us admits to bluffing about having seen a film because we think we ought to have done.

Schindler's List, The Da Vinci Code, The Godfather and Apocalypse Now are all high on the film bluff list.

The research also says men are 17% more likely to be deceptive about what films they've seen than their female counterparts. Men are also much more likely to show off about the films they have seen.

Film-dropping - the cultural equivalent of name-dropping - is twice as prevalent in men than women, according to the research. Despite professing to be experts on the critically acclaimed classics, we tend to keep our real favourite films in the closet. When asked about furtive film favourites, The Sound of Music came top of the shame film charts.

Tom Beaumont-Griffin, creator of myfilms.com, said: "Films are so much a part of our everyday conversation that it's no great surprise that we tend to bluff about what films we've seen to keep up with our colleagues, friends and family. The fact that we judge people on their film tastes is testament that films play such an important part in our lives on daily basis."

So buff or bluff, which are you? Do you avoid or seek out films with subtitles?

Let us know your favourite below.

My favourite films are 8½, Last Year at Marienbad,
Three Colours Trilogy, oh and Anal Girls Of Tobacco Road

Ha! There you go. It's not titles you should be dropping but directors!

My favourites depend on what mood I'm in. But anything by Luc Besson or Tim Burton usually gets up there. Guilty pleasures? Most things by Paul Verhoeven.

Compared to many other films released these days, the Da Vnci code is just that.

My favourites film is Day of the Jackal, and my shames list would be topped by almost any cheesy musical, especially Gene Kelly.

Why would anyone have to lie about seeing The Da Vinci Code? It's not exactly an intellectual tour de force now is it.
