They Would Have Been Happy With Nul Points
The glove puppet failed to make an impression in the public vote despite his country's history in the contest, which it has won a record seven times. Ten countries out of 19 won through, with a further semi-final to be held in Belgrade on Thursday night.
The UK, as a big cash backer of the contest, is an automatic finalist.
Dustin, who sang Douze Points, has previously recorded six albums and has performed duets with artists including Bob Geldof and Chris De Burgh. The feathered performer set a new standard for the weird and wonderful world of Eurovision when he exploded on stage in a burst of green, white and gold.
Dustin sang propped up in a jazzed-up shopping trolley and surrounded by a flock of dancers. He later told the Irish Independent he was "disappointed" but would accept the voters' decision.
"I urge my fans across Europe to be dignified in defeat. I do not want street riots as I'm a peace-loving bird," he said.
The 20 successful semi-finalists will join last year's winner Serbia as well as the UK, France, Germany and Spain - the four biggest contributors to the event - in the final on Saturday. The UK will be represented by X-Factor finalist Andy Abraham.
UPDATE!!! Sir Terry Wogan said he may quit as the BBC's Eurovision commentator! Sir Terry cast doubt on his role after saying this year's results showed it was "no longer a music contest".
