The most evil lottery in the world?
Is this sort of postcode lottery evil?
UPDATE 21-06-2007: The moaning old tart lost her case, as reported in Dutch news paper de Telegraaf.

The Dutch have a lottery based on your postcode.
Not like the UK one where the number is your postcode plus three digits, making the number unique.
You buy a ticket with your postcode on it, and so do your neighbours. Then if your postcode comes up, everyone with a ticket who lives in that postcode wins a share of the jackpot.
If you have two tickets, you get a double share, and so on.
This is a lottery designed to make you too scared not to enter. Can you imagine seeing all your neighbours swanning around in their new Porsches while you still have to pootle along in your Astra? You wouldn't dare not buy a ticket.
Helene de Gier from Heusden in the Netherlands never bought a ticket, and her street came up. Now she's suing the Postcode Lottery for damages following the €13.9 million win. She was seen on national television crying that if she had bought a ticket, she would be a millionaire now.
So what is she? A moaning old slapper, or someone to be pitied? Tell us what you think.

Waa waa waaaah!
tough

In answer to Revrobuk, the postcode covers 8 houses in Helene's case. Her other seven neighbours all bought a ticket!
What I find ridiculous is that while this is quite an evil little lottery, the Dutch are clamping down on some low-stakes cash poker games organised in bonafide casinos. It's ridiculous hypocrisy. Ah, the state doesn't make money from poker now, does it? .....

First I thought it was a April Fool's Joke. "Gier" means in German "Greed" ;-)

Dutch postcodes don't cover many houses, no.
They are a bit like British ones, where not too many people have the same.

I would rather the NHS operations lottery than seeing all of my neighbours winning millions and me not.

It's not as evil as the UK post code lottery that decides if you get hip replacements, cancer treatment, expensive drug therapies, etc.

Do the Dutch post code areas only cover 13 houses? That's the only way Pam Ferris up there would be a millionaire.

It's totally evil, but we still buy our ticket every week, out of pure fear.
